Our Story:

Gnarly's is a spin-off from The Gnarly Toybox, a successful vintage toy store in Lakewood. Co-owner Brandon Riks's passion for collecting vintage toys, especially '80s nostalgic lines like Masters of the Universe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, began after he lost a suitcase of He-Man toys as a child. This "clingy" attachment to items led him to open The Gnarly Toybox in 2018 with his wife and business partner, Stacey Bell, initially stocking it with extras from his personal collection. The Gnarly Toybox has since become highly successful, even featured on the television show A Toy Store Near You and expanding with franchises internationally.

With The Gnarly Toybox thriving, Riks and Bell sought a new frontier for their passion for all things playful and strange: a live performance venue. When they learned that the Miners Alley Playhouse space at 1224 Washington Avenue, Suite 200, Golden, CO 80401 was becoming available, the idea of a comedy club quickly evolved into something much more "gnarly". The space was "pretty turnkey," as the Playhouse left behind lights and sound equipment, requiring only that Riks and Bell "turn it gnarly".

At Gnarly's, we aim to shake up Golden with an over-the-top concept that blends diverse live performances, nostalgic delights, and a truly unique atmosphere. Our vision is to offer a constant stream of entertainment and experiences that are both wonderfully weird and incredibly fun.

What Makes Us Gnarly:

Diverse Live Entertainment

Expect a wide array of performers including sideshow freaks, jugglers, comedians, ventriloquists, and magicians. You might even catch our street performers juggling bowling pins outside, enticing you with promises of chainsaw juggling inside.

The Gnarly's Free Toy Museum

Relive your childhood with our free toy museum, primarily showcasing Brandon Riks's collection of '80s vintage toys. While we don't sell toys here, we plan to open a second Gnarly Toybox nearby in Golden where you can purchase similar items.

Vintage Arcade Games

Step back in time in our arcade, featuring vintage video games from the '80s.

Unique Snacks and Drinks

We offer a selection of pre-packaged snacks with a twist, including foreign versions of familiar items like duck tongue-flavored Lay's from Korea and giant Skittles from the U.K.. Our '50s-style soda jerk also serves up nostalgic, kid-friendly refreshments like Shirley Temples, lemonade, and chocolate malts.

Family-Friendly Days and Adult Nights

Starting after spring break next year, we will host eight shows a day oriented toward families. In the evenings, Gnarly's transitions to adult-oriented fare with standup comedy and burlesque, complemented by our full bar and liquor license.

The City of Golden has shown full support for our "over-the-top concept," recognizing our aim to bring a vibrant new cultural experience to the area. We are excited to become a lively hub in Golden, where we want to "shut down Golden and have lines out the door" with "Jugglers, freaks, snakes. You know, whatever is fun".
